7 New Hobbies for the Highly Creative

July 9, 2016

Let’s face it, we all get bored of what we’re doing once in awhile. On days when our patience wears thin faster than usual and inspiration eludes us, it’ll probably be a good time to divert our attention to an entirely different activity. However, no matter who you are, we’re sure that you’d be excited to explore these new creative hobbies that are bound to ignite passion and brew creativity.

  1. Handlettering

Calligraphy, brush lettering, typography – the growing prominence of handwritten typefaces in recent years has united lettering artists worldwide. After all, who doesn’t love a well-executed cursive against a watercolour background and floral motifs crafted by hand? These artistic feats have inspired budding calligraphers to document their journeys toward improvement and prompted professionals to contribute guides, tips and tricks to online communities for learners, making it a prime time to delve into the art of hand-lettering.

  1. Baking

Tinkering around the kitchen tends to be viewed as the ‘same-old’ past-time, but the truth couldn’t be farther from that. If you’ve seen videos of patissiers laying down the perfect galaxy cake glazes, or self-taught enthusiasts piping the most intricate buttercream roses you’ve seen on a tray of cupcakes, you’d know exactly what I’m talking about. It isn’t easy to tear your eyes away from the screen once the video begins and the masterpiece starts to unfold – so why not try your hand at making your own confectionery?

  1. Zine making

If you’ve always associated zines with pulp fiction, staple-bound pages and general nerdiness, you’re actually right. Zine-making has roots in fan-made material and informal publishing, which explains the association of zines with dissent and nonconformity. Zines can be a great medium for the exploration of thoughts and ideas without the pressure to perform or publish. A photocopier, paper and staples are all you need to get started!

  1. Making art

When the creative juices run dry, working in an ambience and setting you aren’t familiar with may just be the key to getting your engines up and revving again. Art jamming is a great alternative if you’re the kind to shut yourself in when working on a brand new piece. Alternatively, take it outside – urban sketching can be a refreshing activity for seasoned illustrators. Or if you’re looking for warmups, adult colouring books are great exercises to start your day.

  1. Bookbinding

Finding the perfect notebook for your needs can be a challenge, but it doesn’t have to be when you can make it yourself. Bookbinding is a great hobby to pick up – the repetitive tasks of folding signatures, punching holes and sewing spines are highly comforting and calming. More importantly, these notebooks are highly useful and customisable to one’s personal preferences. If you’re exhausted from hunching over your desk and pouring over your notebooks, why not spend the time creating one for yourself?

  1. Risograph printing

Initially viewed as a cheap format of printing, artists have increasingly put a spin on conventional tools to produce great artwork. If you’re looking for a new medium to explore, this could be it – risographs are well loved for their sprightly colours as well as the process of making a print. Beyond creating the artwork, the onus is on the artist to coordinate its execution, such as the gradation and overlay of the colour palette.

  1. Floral arrangement

Floral arrangement has been gaining popularity amongst creatives in recent times. Apart from learning about the different species of flora you’re working with, you’ll also get to further hone an eye for design and aesthetics in the language of flowers. Floral arrangement is a therapeutic hobby which is great for refocusing a turbulent mind and centering scattered energies.

If you’re seeking new inspiration in life, these 7 creative hobbies would be great additions to creative lifestyles like yours. With their heightening popularity and growing communities worldwide, now’s the best time to hop on board and expand your interests in these pastimes.

7 Taboo Gifts to Give During A Birthday

July 1, 2016

There must have been at least one birthday present in your life that you thought was utterly inappropriate or insensitive. Some gifts just make you scratch your head and wonder what you did in life to deserve this.

Whether it’s because of absolute cluelessness of the giver or lack of attention, certain gifts can deliver the wrong message, and should be avoided. Stay tuned for 7 that you should never give to others and why it might be the worst gift idea ever.

Self-Help Book

You might think that books are great gifts, and they are. As long as they don’t deliver secret messages, especially messages that might look like you’re hinting that someone needs help. Even if this was true, birthdays aren’t the right situation to remind someone how damaged they might be.

Re-gifted Gift

There might have been a lousy gift you received at some point. It could have been a book you’re not keen on reading, or a perfume whose scent is not exactly your cup of tea, but re-gifting is one of the greatest taboos when it comes to birthdays. It’s tacky, and it doesn’t really show a lot of care and love towards the person who’s celebrating the birthday.

Framed Selfie

Narcissism might be a common thing nowadays, but it’s definitely not something to show off in someone’s birthday gift. No matter how gorgeous you think you turned out on that picture. There is literally no single excuse for gifting a framed picture of yourself.

Think about it like this. The love towards your best friend could be endless, but there’s no actual reminder of that love if your bestie gives you herself framed as a birthday gift.

Anti-Aging Products

Although it might come in handy once you pass the age of 25, nobody needs a reminder that they’re getting old on one of the most special days of the entire year. Let them worry about wrinkles another day and try giving them something a little less blunt.

Most people say that socks become an awesome birthday gift passed a certain age, but I believe that if anyone were to choose between socks and getting something else for birthday, everyone would pick option number too. Nobody can be overly enthusiastic about socks, especially during birthdays. After all, what meaning does it carry?

’Here you go, a pair of fuzzy socks. All of your socks have holes in them, and plus we had some spair left from Granny’s Christmas stocking stuffers. Happy B-Day.’

Coupons & Vouchers

No matter how frugal someone likes to be, coupon books are not exactly the gift that screams love. Although this is a thing of personal choice, as anything else in life, coupons and vouchers aren’t exactly the best representation of best wishes.

People usually love to feel special for their birthdays and feel like a million dollars. Coupons aren’t exactly a dream gift of someone who wants to feel special.

Make someone feel alive on their birthday, but don’t gift them something alive. You never know how they will react, and even if you do, it’s something that needs to be discussed in advance, so that the surprise puppy or kitten don’t end up in a shelter a couple of weeks later.

This gifts are taboo not simply because they show lack of attention and care, but because they can actually disturb someone. So make sure you put some thought into each and every birthday gift, no matter how close that person is to you.

It’s their special day, and the least you can do is take some time to avoid a gift catastrophe.

6 Important Tips to Live Happy

June 27, 2016

We all have goals and dreams, whether it ‘be reaching super stardom, or having the most luxurious house, a vacation home on a private island or a couple of the hottest cars in our garage. But once we get passed the materialistic things, what is it that actually makes us happy and gives substance to our lives?

How do we grow and become someone who is happy, humble yet living the life of their dreams without too much stress?

In the end, everyone’s goal is to be happy. That feeling of warmth and content can’t be gained through buying extremely expensive items, whether you realise it now or you’re still getting to that point.

But in order to achieve ultimate happiness, you need to know how. You need someone to tell you what it is that makes every single day happy. Because you don’t just find a happy life, you make it.

  1. Grateful

Being grateful is a great way to regain inspiration, will and motivation. Overall, showing gratitude for what you already have in life may result in you feeling more up for helping others and improving your own life quality as well. Take some time out of your day to think about what you are grateful for. Whether it’s the free time you had to unwind, or the lovely flower bouquet you got from your partners, be thankful.

  1. Accept Failure

Life is full of ups and downs, and this is not something to be taken lightly. It’s not just a flat line, where everything is rainbows and sunshine. And those moments when you’re feeling down and broken, are exactly the times when you should think the most positive. It’s when we’re broken that the light shines through, and we can learn and grow the most.

Accept failure as an inevitable part of life, and don’t resent yourself or others. Learn from your mistakes and you’ll be a happier person. This also means learning to let go.

  1. Find Balance

Whether it’s your work and your personal life, your relationships with friends and family, you need to learn to balance. Balance is important, because too much of anything makes us feel worn out and unhappy. But, if you properly balance every single aspect of your life, you’ll feel more fulfilled, your life will be richer, and you’ll feel confident that you’re the one taking control and balancing your own happiness. And once you realise you’re the one in control, you’ll never feel helpless and lost again.

  1. Make Yourself a Top Priority

Some people might think this is selfish, but quite contrary. In order to be happy, you can’t just live your life thinking of others and how you can please then. While it’s necessary to be selfless, kind and loving, you can’t be content, if you’re not happy.

Always take some time out of your day to reflect on your feelings. Ask yourself, are you happy? And if so, be grateful. And if not, try to figure out what you are missing.

  1. Take a Time Out

Another very crucial thing for happiness is to take a time out from everything you have going on around you. We’re not talking about days of seclusion, but rather a few months or hours of solitude and peace. Go out for a walk in nature or spend a day outdoors, without your laptop, phone or planner. Simplify life.

We’re not suggesting to disband all things material, but you can, if that’s your cup of tea. We live in such a day and age where we’re surrounded by ’pretty things’ and that’s okay. Just don’t make them the basis for happiness, and look at the world with a positive mind. Once you change your mind set, you’ll change your life.

A Better Florist Introduces the First of Its Kind Messenger Bot in Asia

June 8, 2016

After a gruelling half year of working on the prototype of our in-house messenger bot, we are proud to unveil our latest innovation called “Betabot” which combines both the efficacy of the modern chat messenger and a live agent. We are expected to be the first online florist in Asia to use the messenger bot to facilitate the ordering experience, and its offerings span from the likes of sending normal or customized orders to the times of welcoming feedback. The in-house technology development is in the testing phase ‚and have gone through many rounds of User Acceptance Tests (“UATs”) internally. A perfect marriage of a call centre agent and a Whatsapp chat message, that is exactly what Betabot is bringing to the table.

Constantly improving our technology

Although much is to be done in terms of improving the automation of responses and coordinating of the alternative live agent to respond to customer inquiries, we are proud to set the standards for the online florist scene in Asia.

Changing perceptions of artificial intelligence

While many perceive that the lack of human intelligence may be a cause of concern, our founder, and CEO, Steve Feiner, remains undefeated and exudes positive vibes during his chat with the editorial team. While artificial intelligence has its limitations, it’s something that scientists and researchers are constantly improving on. A Better Florist strives to use this to our advantage and work on improving existing systems and technology.

Gibson Tang, the Chief Technical Officer of A Better Florist team said , “ One staff had suggested on a credit card payment initiative. Sounds like a great idea initially, but ultimately not a feasible or practical solution as there are security issues and data protection rights of our customers that we have to consider. We had to halt the plans and expand on other more feasible features to include in Betabot.”

Words from our CEO

Steve said, “We love our customers and making them satisfied and happy is our utmost priority. Having Betabot on our website will be the mark of something extraordinary. We are not talking merely about improved communication, but rather we are changing the industry’s ballgame altogether. We seek to change the way consumers approach online flower delivery businesses and seek to provide even better customer service than what the brick and mortar shops can offer.”

While we are expecting many teething problems and hiccups upon the launch of the Betabot, we are certainly excited at the prospect of potentially positive benefits that this bot will bring upon its launch. Betabot is slated to be ready for its debut towards the end of 2016 but the exact date of launch is yet to be finalised as of publishing time. While the launching of Betabot is no longer a surprise now, all eyes will be fixed on us as the pioneer in the flower delivery industry in Asia to embark on this amazing technology.

10 Tips to Stay Cool This Summer

May 13, 2016

Summer is almost here and with it comes to the grueling heat and tiring dehydration. But, we would be lying if we didn’t say that we love summer, in fact, we’re summer junkies. We love the gorgeous glowing tans, the tasty and refreshing cocktails, the gorgeous and enchanting roses and the smell of the beach. The summer really does bring out the best in people. Everyone seems so positive and full of energy. But, with all the summer fun and activities, it’s absolutely necessary to take of your body and find ways to stay cool during the hot summer days.

  1. Icy Treats

Yes, we do mean the dangerously over-tasty ice-cream. Not only is it a delicious treat, it helps you stay cool during the hottest days of summer. If you’re really paying attention to calories, there are healthy alternatives for ice-cream that will do the same trick!

  1. Hair Tricks

During the summer, your hair can feel like a faux fur vest. It’s good for the winter, but when you’re boiling hot, it just won’t do. Here you have two options, either go for a sassy short bob or tie your hair in top knots, ponytails, and sexy messy buns. The point being, get your hair out of the way!

  1. Dress Brighter and Lighter

Make sure to avoid dark colors and thick materials. Go for clothing that’s made of natural materials and is brighter colors, in order to absorb less heat. Also, make sure that the clothing you’re wearing isn’t too tight, but more on the loose side, so that your skin can catch an occasional breeze and cool itself down.

  1. Water is Your BFF

During the summer days, you should avoid caffeine, and drink plenty of water. To be more precise, hydrate yourself every 15 minutes. In the high heat, the body tends to dehydrate very fast, that’s why it’s important to hydrate more often.

  1. Stay Covered

We can’t stay hidden inside the house forever, snuggling next to the AC in order to avoid the heat. But, when you do have to go out and let’s say buy a birthday gift for your best friend, stay covered. Hats, snapbacks, umbrellas, and trees you name it. Did you know that the cooling effect of one tree is equivalent to ten standard-sized air conditioners?

  1. Spray Bottle on the Go

Take a simple spray bottle and fill it up with water, then place it in the freezer to cool for a bit. Just grab it and put it in your purse whenever you go out. It’s so refreshing to spray yourself with cold water unless you’re wearing full-face makeup. Then it’s just not fun.

  1. Eliminate Strenuous Activities

Certain activities are just impossible to do in the summer. We’re not suggesting to stop going to the gym or play sports but go easy on yourself. Your body has a hard time dealing with the heat, so slow down.

  1. Turn Off Appliances

Whenever you’re not using your appliances, turn them off. They produce so much heat and make your entire house warmer than it should actually be.

  1. Eat Right

If you’re a major soup lover we’re so sad to say this, but a hot meal isn’t the best solution for the warmest summer days. Opt for lighter foods that are easier on the stomach and can’t be eaten or prepared without heat, such as salads and everything that comes in a fruit basket.

  1. Cool Yourself Tactically

So, this is a trick that you can do whether you have makeup on or not. If you’re in public, but you desperately need to cool down, go to the bathroom and cool your neck, wrists on your hands with cool water. Keep it under it for as much as you can. These are tactical areas that can make your entire body feel cooler.

How do you keep your cool during the summer? Share your tricks with us, because sharing is caring!

Have you been searching around the web for interesting yet gorgeous ways to savour the beauty of flowers? Floral ice cubes are a perfect way to brighten up your next afternoon drink. It’s great for parties, and it’s affordable and simple to make. Master this simple technique and the next time you take a sip of water can be an experience to remember. Imagine drinking your favorite drink with red roses in ice cubes? Now, that’s fabulous!

Follow these steps to create the perfect flower ice cube.

You will need:

  • Distilled water

Why distilled water you may ask? If you want your ice cubes to look clear, make sure the water is not blurry. We recommend using distilled water that has been boiled and cooled because it contains fewer impurities that would make the water hazy.

  • Ice cube trays

Any ice cube tray of your choice will do. They can be plastic or rubber ones, and you’re certainly welcome to play around with shapes!

  • Edible flowers

Make sure to use flowers which are edible like an orchid or snapdragons. All flowers that weren’t grown to be eaten and treated with chemicals are not a good option.

Two-step process:

  1. Take an ice cube tray (plastic or rubber one), preferably larger one and fill the quarter of it with distilled water. If you choose smaller trays, your floral ice cubes will melt faster, and your beautiful homemade decoration will be gone in a blink of an eye.
  2. Place your flowers facing downwards, and freeze them. Here, you have the option to play around with the quantity of flowers. You can insert only one, or several of them if they are small and won’t take up the entire cube.
  3. Afterwards, add more water so your trays are half way full and freeze again. Repeat the last step one more time, meaning, fill all the way to the top and freeze again.

They are too gorgeous to eat, but…they are too tempting to pass on. It’s also a great way to brighten up your day and add a special touch to your next cocktail party. And all it really takes is water and cheap flowers.

How about you? Do you know any other fun ways to incorporate flowers into your meals and drinks? Do share, we’d love to hear your ideas!

10 Ways to Style Flowers for Mother’s Day

April 29, 2016

Flowers. Every woman adores them because they are quite the little beauties. They can make every event special, especially if you’re looking to surprise someone. For example, roses are a great way to make someone feel loved or show your passion towards them. On Mother’s Day, what you’re really looking for is your mom’s favorite flowers, styled in an original and beautiful way, and it will deliver the right sentiment without any doubt.

But if you’re really out of ideas and aren’t really the creative type, here are 10 different ways to style flowers for Mother’s Day that will make you look like a pro.

Focus on One Bloom

A gorgeous bouquet of flowers doesn’t have to be a mixture of various blooms in fact. Go mono botanic and pick up just on the type of flower that you love the most and pick up several bundles of it. Then you can make the bouquet or arrangement to be impressive and gorgeous by spreading the flowers around.

Seasonal Styling

Since Mother’s Day is celebrated on different days or even months throughout the entire world, you can style your flowers by choosing the flowers of the season and paying attention that the colors represent the colors of the specific season.

In the last year, flowers in Singapore which are in glass containers were huge hit, however, we’re suggesting to put your flowers in a non-transparent container. That way, your mom won’t have to stress about the murky water that can bee is seen through a glass container, plus, the detailing on the container can add a special touch to flowers.

The Same Cut

If you want a more clean look, take a vase or a container and measure one stem of the flower so that it just peeks out of the container. Then take the rest of the flowers and cut them so that they are all perfectly aligned in the container. Sometimes, perfection is simple.

Rustic Look

If you’re going for a more fresh-of-the-market look, you don’t necessarily have to run to the open market and buy fresh flowers. Get three kinds of blooms, and some greenery and wrap it all up in a paper. It’s going to look spontaneous, natural yet put together at the same time.

Focus on the Color

Make your bouquet vibrant and joyful by choosing different blooms of bright and strong colors that will get a double-take everywhere you pass.

Elegant Whiteness

Is your mom a classy gal? Stick with white flowers with greenery or vines, and keep the arrangement simple by tying a simple white or golden bow around it.

Think Small Yet Vibrant

Bigger doesn’t always mean prettier. Why not choose a smaller bouquet packed with gorgeous pink and purple blooms that keep the entire arrangement fun and vivid.

Unique Vessel

It’s not all about glass containers. If you’re struggling to give your bouquet that extra pop, pick a vessel that has a unique shape, and that doesn’t necessarily look like a vase.

Go Bold with Branches

If you’re more into gifting a grandiose bouquet, than try and make your simple arrangement stand out in size by adding a couple of cleaned up, long branches.

Always think in terms of combining colors, varieties, shapes and designs. It’s not all about getting the most expensive bloom. There’s something in putting a little bit of your own thought and imagination into creating the perfect Mother’s Day bouquet that’s going to have your name written all over it.
